Advertising Companies will always be objectifying women

When it comes to advertising, anything that can create buzz is and will always be used !!! I know because i happen to run an advertising company with it’s Buzz creating and PR sections.

So that would seam weird for people in the industry, to hear that an Ad agency -none the less- is waging war against objectifying women in ads … But from the basic principle of PR, you would immediately understand that the campaign goal is to hijack feminists agenda, for indirect self promotion.

here’s the video by the agency:
They basically searched on the internet for ads objectifying women throughout the world …

I am not saying it is ok, to show women in every ad, but it seams that the image of sexy women is way more effective to attract the attention of MEN, and that’s why agencies have been using the image of women since ever, also that’s why they hire more female receptionists, and why modeling agencies hire mostly female models  …

Reality is, humans operate on basic instincts, especially when in automated mode, breeding, hunger and fear are huge factors in our decision making, even-though most of us don’t even realize that. Read the emotional role in advertising.

That’s why Sex sells when it comes to advertising, and when it comes to business and capital, what works is often reproduced and considered a rule of success.

It’s true that in some cases the agencies are rude and highly unprofessional, for example this agency in Singapore that made this Burger King ad , got probably a lot of negative press. But they say all press is good press.

But then again, the views are what interest the agencies and the customer, so you could see why Car’s Jr Superbowl Ad featured a naked woman, well because if it didn’t they would have to work 30-40 times harder to make the ad get the same attention and viewership, and that’s 30 time the budget of the ad …

Objectifying women, is not going anytime soon, simply because it is effective in selling stuff to men! But then again, the only way that would happen is if you go to live in Saudi Arabia or other religiously strict countries, were laws forbid this type of ads, or if laws are passed to block the use, but that would be a challenge to the freedom of speech.

-On a side note, as a man, i am sorry, but we men, are too rough, except for flagrant mistakes like the Burger King ad above, most of us see nothing wrong in featuring a sexy woman in an ad –

Fighting Addiction : We are all Addicts !

When we hear the word addict, we imagine someone who have a drug or alcohol abuse problem, drug abuse and alcohol abuse are two destructive behaviors, that are easy to detect and identify, and most importantly, they are easy to distant ourselves from …

In our modern society, advertising succeed in brainwashing us, leading us to become addicted to many substances -nicotine, caffeine, etc – and behaviors that we naturally wouldn’t have.

Reality of the matter, most of us are addicts!

Addiction, goes way beyond, drug and alcohol abuse, addiction is the behavior of requiring something without moderation, addiction is the behavior of wasting time and energy, extensively pursuing something or experiences, that are not of any real importance to our existence.

In many cases these addictions are outright harmful:
Alcohol Addiction: Many do not even realize they have this addiction, especially when amount of alcohol/ day is low.
Drug Addiction: Whether it’s Street drugs or Prescription drugs, it’s one of the most difficult to escape from.
Nicotine Addiction: This substance addiction is harmful to you and your close ones, most addicts take it lightly.
Gambling Addiction: This behavioral addiction is probably the most financially ruining of them all, remember the house always wins!

For the majority of us, the above cases does not apply, thus we pretend that we do not have any addiction problem. This is wrong, because there are a big list of less harmful behavioral and substance addictions, that i’m sure you can identify at least one, within your behavior. Below i’m listing those behaviors:

“Less harmful” perceived, Addictions:
Video Games: Have you spend hours playing a game? Sometimes till 3 or 4 am, till your eyes start burning and you absolutely can not stay awake any longer? Do you lose track of days, and wake up and sleep thinking of your video game? Does this situation happen often? You have Video Games addiction, sometimes this only happen when you enjoy playing a new game, and can’t stop till you finish all the levels, and this problem reappears every-time you start an interesting new game.
Internet: A general term, that usually mean wasting your time reading news, watching cat pictures, videos, participating in forums and online communities, in an excessive way. The internet is an amazing tool to research subjects and acquire new information, but it’s also a huge waste of time and productivity! According to former Carly Fiorina, HP former CEO, and current presidential candidate ,85-95% Of What We Do Online Is Superficial And Useless.
Facebook: Even-though it’s an internet site, i am setting a new category for facebook, as with no doubt, Facebook is entirely useless, and the biggest productivity and time wasting tool of this decade! At one time, Facebook would have been considered as a promotion tool, but even that have been scraped when the company killed page reach to sell more ads and make more money! Nowadays Facebook is the favorite time wasting activity the human population engages in, it has absolutely no educational value, and is redefining the way people socially interact with one another!
Sugar: The biggest not so secret secret, is that most of us are addicted to sugar, where to start … fruit juice, colas: Pepsi, Coca Cola, ice cream …, even fast food is full of sugar, we have made our body so addicted to sugar, that stopping sugar all together or drastically cutting the sugar consumption lead to sugar withdrawal symptoms –Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Dizziness, Fatigue, Flu-like reaction, Insomnia, Shakes, …-, the same way stopping drug addiction leads to withdrawal symptoms!

Food: Food addiction is, being addicted to junk food, sugary product aside, this cover a lot of none healthy food, like chips, fast food, etc … You know this is not healthy but still can’t stop.
Porn: Watching porn and porn related behavior, are addictive, furthermore they influence the future and current intimate relations by involuntarily comparing scripted movies to actual sex life, which in many cases lead to a dissatisfaction and relationship problems, a lot of studies suggest that pornography is simply bad for your brain!
Watching movies & series: This addiction is often ignored, and not taken in consideration usually when listing addictions, but addiction to movies and series is very common, how many of us wait for our favorite series from one week to the other, how many of us are able to just decide to stop watching their favorite series just because? Movies and Series addiction is much more common and destructive than you might think … It is a big waste of time, and have a negative influence on our social and family behavior. With the advent of on demand online movies/series platforms, like Netflix & co, a new behavior of successively watching several episodes or even seasons, have developed among users of these services, this behavior called “binge watching”. According to researchers, binge watching your favorite shows online can cause feelings of loneliness and depression.
Caffeine: You need a coffee or two each day to stay awake and focused? Guess what, you are addicted to Caffeine! Although caffeine is one of the safest substances to enhance your performance, it can lead to long term dependency.
Mobile: You are playing with your mobile a lot, checking Facebook, twitter, playing a game, messaging, instagraming etc … you are most definitely addicted to your mobile device! Needless to say the negative sides of such a behavior!

mobile and friends

“Good” Addictions:
There is nothing really called a good addiction, but these types of addictions can have a positive influence, in addition to the negative influence.
Work: Addiction to work often affect entrepreneurs, and employees in management positions. While it might be seen as a necessity for the professional career, work addiction if not managed properly will have a huge toll on personal health and on family life.
Exercising: Addiction to exercising, is a compulsive behavior, exercising is good, but like anything thing done in an excessive way it have a negative side, the negative side is taking time from other activities, and often developing abnormal muscle size and none attractive looks.
Sex: There is a debate on whether sex addiction is real, but it seams people with hyper-sexual activity disorder, often have underlying problems like: depression, stress, anxiety, shame … This addiction often leads to loneliness and isolation.
Shopping: Shopping addiction is the compulsion to spend money, regardless of need or financial means. This kind of addiction targets mostly women, and may become problematic for individuals with low income.
Reading: Reading is very important to improve your language skills, but the moment it becomes an addiction, pushing you to read any book you can find, then it is just as harmful as any of the other time wasting addictions.

Fighting Addiction

This article took much more time than what i anticipated, i’ll end it with this small paragraph.

Fighting addiction, requires a strong will power, to become successful in fighting addictions, follows the same general rules of becoming successful.

I, myself have been addicted to many of the addictions mentioned above, none of the harmful addictions though, fighting my addictions made me reflect on many things, and i have started writing a small book about succeeding in fighting addictions, which will be announced on my official blog.

Psychological Advertising : Is The NRA behind Zombie golden age ?

Emotional Appeal,  is a method of persuasion that’s designed to create an emotional response. They are considered fallacies, or errors in reasoning, because they manipulate emotions.
That means, these persuasion techniques will trick your brain into believing certain things are good for you, by manipulating the emotional part of your brain.
Emotional Appeal in Advertising, have a huge role, the method is used in the majority of televised advertising.
I won’t explain this here, but you can see the article below, which present the main types of appeals , and how they are used:
In short, advertisers have been targeting our emotions for a long time, they create an emotional response toward something, and they wire us in a certain way without even knowing,  it’s not something new.
But if you reflect about this fact for a while you realize that the Movies and more specifically TV series can and are probably used in the same way.

Psychological Advertising : Is The NRA behind Zombie golden age ?

And i can’t find a better example than the rise of the Zombie entertainment and a possible association with the NRA.
The mass school shootings in the USA are pushing a lot of people to ask for tougher gun laws, but somehow that is not happening due to opposition.
When the president of the US, feels he is powerless towards changing the gun laws, that means a lot:

Of course there’s the gun lobby, which have a huge role in the political opposition, but there is something else …
Politicians can not go against their constituencies,  whenever there is a certain amount of people asking for tougher gun laws, there is another amount of people asking for the opposite …
Many, people feel safer with a gun in the house, but why do people feel safer with a gun?It is most likely because their brains are ironically associating owning a gun with being safe, so how did the brain manage to do this association in a country where there are no armed conflicts???!!!
The answer comes from Hollywood, action filled movies often portrayed people having the ability to defend themselves mainly to the use of a gun.
But with greater opposition to opposition to guns, a stronger influence is required to make those influenced defend more aggressively gun ownership, and to influence those who were neutral in this matter.
The stronger influence, would be by making your brain think that everyone needs guns, and what better way than pump in your brains the unconscious feeling of insecurity of a zombie apocalypse?
This makes you associate a high emotional value for gun ownership, and would help block gun control laws.
This is the ideal advertising method, for huge companies that have enough cash to finance big budget movies and tv series.
Think about it …. could the NRA secretly funding Zombie movies and series?
Zombie movies/series might have something to do with Umpqua Community College shooting, the shooter Christopher Harper-Mercer seams to be a big fan of zombie movies according to an online dating profile.
As you see below, he mentions hobbies: killing zombies, and food: Brains !!!

What is Growth Hacking? define growth hacking!

A buzz word that have been repeated a lot lately and that started to surface beginning 2013, the word is “Growth Hacking” and it’s variations like Growth Hacker , to growth hack etc…

As the Manager/ founder of an advertising company and a pioneer in viral marketing, i was obviously curious…
especially when having worked in advertising for almost 10 years and managing my own firm for close to 8 years.

So i started researching the different strategies used in Growth hacking, and to my surprise the only thing new was the name … I mean these strategies … we have been using since ever, and it’s mainly basic and advanced marketing techniques!

But then again, there’s always a reason behind the use of a name, Growth hacking is not target at selling goods or products, it is simply the techniques used to Grow the user base of a website or mobile application.

It is a general term that groups different strategies from SEO optimization to press relations

In short, it’s not a new discipline, it’s simply a categorization of some strategies that can be helpful to grow the userbase of a company.

Imitating Success – celebrities teachers for society!

I just watched a speech by Jack Gleeson (video below), an Irish actor, best know for playing Joffery Bartheon in the HBO television series Game of Thrones, speaking at the Oxford Union (most prestigious debating society,  established for 190 years, aiming to promote debate and discussion in Oxford University)

Jack mentioned several interesting ideas that i would like to talk about and weigh in.

To start with Jamie Tehrani from Durham university theory: Evolutionary psychology behind fascination with celebrities

Imitating success:The theory centers around the Anthropological notion of Prestige (high social status – admiration or respect)
This prestige is bestowed upon individuals who possess certain adaptive skills like “superior hunting technique”
This prestige is bestowed upon the individuals so that the community can learn from them through imitation.
My opinion: I think in this case, the prestige is not bestowed but earned, it might be true that the others will imitate and will respect this individual, but it’s not due to a prestige by itself but by the survival instinct and the hope of having a better life.

The side effects of imitating success:
The successful hunter might have a ritual, and the people who want to imitate him adapt a ritual as well as the hunting technique.

According to Tehrani theory we have a evolutionary and psychological instinct to imitate celebrities, thus the celebrities have became a social role model, normal people are interested in knowing what they wear, what car they drive, how they live etc…(see: celebrity brand association – marketing wise).

Celebrity worship syndrome: complete dissolution of the self in favor of another: form of religious hysteria.

Celebrities teachers of society ?
Have celebrities became the teachers of society? can we influence the masses through celebrities?
Will we start imitating the town drunk, who posses prestige due to an original fame which faded away a long time ago?
During the last few decades, this celebrity or prestige is granted on the basis of a none adaptive skills – or no skills for that matter, the actor, singer, reality TV star … the majority of these people have nothing of value to offer to the masses.

cavemen celebrity and success

Max vabor theory of charisma, Celebrities have a charisma that is accepted by us as a willing domination (not challenged like the police authority etc …), that’s why politicians often require celebrity endorsement or celebrity status to feel legitimated in the eyes of the public (called gentle charisma).

Chris Rojek a professor in sociology says: “Celebrities are informal life coaches. By watching them, people learn how to groom, learn how to wear their hair, learn what to say, learn what opinions are sexy, learn what’s right-on and not right-on. They’re assimilating all sorts of life-skills,”

And thus the logic of: Influencers  outreach in advertising.

Can celebrities be used to guide society/ manipulate society ?From what we have just learned, a couple very important question are raised:
Can celebrities be used to guide society?
by ensuring that everything covered by the media and published by them is according to a best behavior or certain global good agenda for the country & humanity?
Can celebrities be used to manipulate society?
Guiding society is surely not happening, all the screw ups the celebrities are doing is definitely not guidance material, if there’s something they are spreading it’s misguidance: several divorces, frequent flashing of private body parts, singing almost naked … Unless you want to believe this is all a part of a corruption plan  some secret organization have for humanity! But in authoritarian countries, the celebrity could be and are used to manipulate societies!

Marketing & Advertising what eats most of the startups cash

There’s 2 ways for a startup to be successful, either it will offer something people will absolutely love, or it needs to put a lot of money in Marketing, actually Marketing & Advertising is what eats most of the startups cash!

take the case of Youtube, their cash was spent on servers and bandwith, but their product, “videos and movies hosting service” was loved by the public.

now take the case of Groupon, the spend most of their revenue advertising in every way possible and still i can’t say it became popular!

as for startups that don’t put enough money in marketing and they don’t have something that people love, they will have a rough road, they might last longer than if they spend on advertising but they have much less chance of success than those that advertise!

Business: compete with yourself

You might have not noticed but most big corporations launch competing product, you go to a grocery shop to buy a washing liquid, you see different brands, you might have the impression that there are a lot of competition, but in reality they all are products of 1 or 2 mother company!

So learn from the big companies, launch different products to target the different budgets and different classes of consumers.

This is the strategy that i am going to deploy soon, targeting the 3 different classes of consumers!
